Poetry Assignment #1: Identity
Evaluation: poems will be marked out of 25 marks.
Due date: Tuesday, April 12, 2011
After completing your poetry lists, you will write a free-form poem of 4 to 5 stanzas (depending upon how many list you came up with), modeling it after Kelly Norman Ellis's poem, "Raised By Women". Your poem will highlight your identity. Poems must be typed and handed in on time.
Your poem will:
1) Tell a story
2) Express emotion
3) Describe your life
4) Teach us about you
5) Poke fun at life (if applicable).
You will use your lists as the building blocks of each stanza. For example, if you make a list of types of foods, you might write one stanza about food.
While composing your poem:
The poems will be marked for creativity, originality, and correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

- Try to use interesting and colourful verbs and adjectives. For example instead of writing: "the wind was blowing," you might write: "the wind was howling".
- Try to use some words, or even a whole stanza, in languages other than English.
- Try to include lines of dialogue in the poem.
- If possible, include some poetic devices (for example, similes) in the poem. See class Weebly for definitions and examples of poetic devices.
